The Right Way to Peel an Onion Using a Knife

Peeling an onion with a knife is a straightforward process, but doing it the right way can make the task easier and more efficient.

Start by cutting off both ends of the onion—this includes the root and the stem

Place the onion on its cut flat side to stabilize it. Then, make a shallow vertical cut along the outer skin, just deep enough to break through the first layer of the onion.

Use your knife to carefully peel away the papery outer layer, removing it in pieces. Once the outer layer is gone, you'll reach the moist, edible layers beneath.

If the onion's skin is particularly stubborn, you can score it a bit more with the knife to loosen it.

For a smoother peel, you can also slice through the outer skin in a circular motion as you work your way around the onion

Be cautious with the knife to avoid cutting too deep and wasting any edible onion. This method helps minimize mess and ensures that you have a clean, ready-to-use onion for your recipe.
