Fruits that can help treat constipation naturally
Perhaps the most widely used treatment for constipation is prunes, or dried plums. They are a good source of fibre and contain sorbitol, a natural sugar alcohol that works as a laxative by pulling water into the intestines.
Apples are packed with soluble and insoluble fibre, such as pectin, which can facilitate bowel movement control. This is because pectin acts as a prebiotic, assisting in the growth of beneficial gut bacteria and facilitates stool formation.
Pears also contain sorbitol and are good sources of fibre and natural sugars; they are an important reliever of constipation. Pears have high water content; hence, they add moisture to stool making it easy to pass.
Kiwi fruit is also rich in fibre and digestive enzymes that aid in gut health. Actinidin, an enzyme present in kiwi, can initiate digestion by stimulating the movement of food through the gastrointestinal tract.
Figs can be fresh or dried. They are very effective in diluting or treating cases of constipation. Fresh figs are high in fibre and contain dried figs that contain enzymes which facilitate a bowel movement.
Ripe bananas are good sources of soluble fibre that can absorb water, add bulk to the stool, and help it pass more easily. However, unripe bananas contain more resistant starch, which can cause one to be constipated.
Small seeds and the peel are used to create a decent amount of soluble as well as insoluble fibre, thus maintaining healthy digestion. High intake of these types of berry fruits may even maintain regular bowel movements.
