How to test the purity of jaggery you buy from the market

Testing the purity of jaggery you buy from the market ensures you get high-quality, unrefined sugar. Here are some simple methods to check the purity:

Texture and Appearance: Pure jaggery has a smooth, grainy texture without any artificial colors or additives. Check for uniform color and avoid jaggery that appears overly shiny or has a polished look.

Water Test: Drop a small piece of jaggery into a glass of water. Pure jaggery will dissolve slowly, while adulterated jaggery may leave impurities or artificial colors behind.

Taste and Smell: Pure jaggery should have a distinct, earthy flavor without any added chemical taste. It should not have a strong, artificial odor.

Burn Test: Melt a small piece of jaggery on a heated spoon or pan. Pure jaggery will melt evenly and turn into a golden liquid without foam or residue. Impure jaggery may produce a lot of froth or leave a residue.

Paper Test: Wrap a small piece of jaggery in paper and press lightly. If the paper sticks or becomes discolored, it may indicate the presence of impurities like starch or chemicals.

By performing these simple tests, you can ensure the purity of jaggery before incorporating it into your recipes or daily use.
