Maha Kumbh Mela 2025: How It Started, Why It Is Observed

The sacred event takes place once in 12 years and rotates among four revered cities — Haridwar, Ujjain, Nashik, and Prayagraj. This year, it is all set to take place at the Triveni Sangam in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh.

Ahead of the auspicious festival, the area on the banks of the ‘Sangam’ has been named Mahakumbhnagar besides being notified as a new district by the UP government.

Far more than a religious congregation, the Maha Kumbh is a vibrant celebration interwoven with faith, rituals, and spiritual enlightenment. Some of its age-old rituals include sacred bathing in holy rivers, fasting and charity. This festival offers devotees a path to moksha.

The Maha Kumbh Mela 2025 will commence on January 13, 2025 and conclude on February 26, 2025. It is held once every 12 years in the four holy cities – Haridwar, Prayagraj, Nashik and Ujjain.

The roots of the kumbh mela can be traced to ancient Hindu scriptures and mythology.

One of the earliest references to a similar pilgrimage is mentioned in the Rigveda, which speaks about the divine event of Sagar Manthan, or churning of the cosmic ocean, considered the genesis of the Maha Kumbh Mela.

It is based on the alignment of Jupiter with the Sun and Moon. The planet takes approximately 12 years to complete one full orbit around the Sun. Hence, every time it returns to a specific zodiac sign, the kumbh mela is held.
